Spring
Spring is here! 🌱 Even amid a group of mediocre and paranoid white men trying to destroy the country because, *checks notes* they suck at a game that was always set up for them to win, the vernal equinox is allowing us to embrace a new season mentally and meteorologically.
I haven’t had the concentration to write consistently for the past two months due to (gestures around at everything), but the coming of spring offers a bit of solace. The winter ground is softening, the buds are starting to flower, early morning birdsong permeates the air, and stark winter branches are giving way to lush green leaves. The rebirth, the reset, the renewal. It’s time to…
We’re in the middle of the the last month of the first quarter, which has been a complete shit show, but we’re literally in a new season and it’s time to pivot. It’s time to prepare those gardens, recommit to that exercise routine, tackle that TBR pile, get going on your spring cleaning, or plan an early spring getaway.
It’s also time to set some intentions. It’s more important than ever to be mindful of what we think and say. The airwaves are flooded with a massive amount of draconian prattle designed to make you anxious, distracted, and hopeless. You barely have time to breathe, and that’s by design. (relax your shoulders and unclench your jaw) During this time of renewal, set purposeful intentions around your:
Mental health: “I will set aside 10 minutes a day to focus on self-care, ie, short focused breathwork, journaling, or meditating.”
Personal growth: “I will learn something new each week and actively put it into practice.”
Movement: “I will walk outside for 30 minutes a day to refresh my mind and spirit.”
Community: “I will use my time and talent to help others.”
Thoughts: “I will be mindful to be a good steward over my thoughts.”
Environment: “I will pick a space to clean and declutter to make room for peace and creativity.”
So, as we continue to fight fascism in a “first-world country” in 2025, let’s also bask in the renewal of spring, find joy where we can, and be beacons of light wherever we show up. And to start spring with a chuckle, here’s a video of the late great Biz Markie with his song “It’s Spring Again” 😄
Also, Happy National Single Parents Day! If you know a single parent, give them some love and a shout-out today. As a former single parent, I’m fully aware that this demographic is consistently overlooked and underserved and unfairly blamed for the ills of their community, especially if they’re Black or POC. And for fucks sake STOP calling single-parent homes broken; it’s an asinine society that keeps perpetuating this harmful stereotype that’s broken.
